One week after a fire uphill from the property, new growth emerges. In 2003 a Forest Service fire crew stopped a fire at Little Trout Creek, less than a mile from Campbell's Ferry.
Fire has played an historic and mostly beneficial role in the Salmon River Canyon. Fire is now a greater threat to the property due to the changed landscape, wrought by decades of human intervention in the natural cycle of frequent low intensity fires that visited the area. Large open stands of mature Ponderosa Pine trees have been replaced with thick stands of pine, fir and brush. The photo on the left is the property in the early 50's. On the right is the property in the 90's.
Note the lack of forest cover on the ridges above the property and the open spacing between the trees in the 50's. The owners of the property support the Salmon River Canyon plan to reintroduce fire in its natural
role in the canyon. This includes planned ignitions in the surrounding national forest and human thinning of the trees and removal of small trees and shrubs near historical buildings on the property.
Open stand of Ponderosa Pine, typical of a healthy forest on part of the property.
